Questions
Can I make my own EAN-13 for a product I sell?
Inside your own shop, yes: use a code that starts with 2 (the “in-store code” button) — that range is kept for shops' own use. To sell your product through supermarkets you need real numbers from GS1 Egypt (they start with 622).
What is the check digit?
The last digit of an EAN, UPC or ITF code is worked out from the others. If one digit is misread, the sum no longer matches and the scanner refuses the code instead of selling the wrong product.
Which type should I use?
EAN-13 for products on the shelf, Code 128 for your own codes with letters (shelves, batches, customer cards), ITF-14 on cartons, QR for a link people scan with a phone, Data Matrix where there is very little room.
My label printer prints it too small or cut.
In the print window set the paper to the label size (40×25 or 50×30 mm), scale 100% and margins none, and pick the label printer itself, not “fit to page”.
